West Nile Virus Poses 'Serious' Threat in Ukraine, Officials Warn

May contain: animal, insect, invertebrate, and mosquito

Ukraine is facing a mounting health crisis as the West Nile virus continues to spread, with nearly 12 deaths reported in the past three months. The virus, spread by infected mosquitoes, is a growing concern in the war-torn nation, according to Deputy Health Minister Ihor Kuzin.

The West Nile virus can cause symptoms such as fever, aches, vomiting, rashes, diarrhea, and headaches. It is most common in the summer and fall when mosquito populations peak, and it spreads when mosquitoes bite infected birds and then humans. Outbreaks often occur along bird migratory routes, several of which pass through Ukraine.

Since the start of July, a total of 88 cases have been recorded, with 11 fatalities. Ukrainian officials are bracing for more cases, warning that the virus may become even more widespread.

There is currently no vaccine for the West Nile virus, making prevention key. Health officials advise wearing protective clothing, using mosquito repellent, and installing netting on windows to reduce the risk of infection.
