West-Nile Virus Claims Life of Respected Community Leader Barbara Yaroslavsky
We join the County in mourning the passing of Barbara Yaroslavsky, wife of Ex-Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who represented the 3rd Supervisorial District for 20 years. She unfortunately passed from complications after contracting West Nile Virus at the age of 71.
Among the joyous holiday celebrations that kicked off 2019, there was also sadness and tragedy here in Los Angeles County. We join the County in mourning the passing of Barbara Yaroslavsky, wife of Ex-Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who represented the 3rd Supervisorial District for 20 years. She unfortunately passed from complications after contracting West Nile Virus at the age of 71.
Barbara Yaroslavsky was also a respected community leader and longtime volunteer and activist in the Jewish community and on behalf of various health care and education non-profits. She was the past president of the Medical Board of California and was president of the LA Commission on Community and Family Services. She also served as a board member of Friends of the Saban Community Clinic, California Board of Registered Nursing, and on the advisory board of LA’s BEST Afterschool Enrichment program.
While we at the Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District pay our respects and honor her memory, we urge all of our community members to follow these simple safety tips to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community:
- Remove all standing water on your property; that is where mosquitoes breed.
- Ensure rain barrels are properly sealed to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
- Ensure all screens around your home are in good repair to keep mosquitos out.
- Wear loose long sleeve shirts and long pants to prevent mosquitoes from biting.
- Wear insect repellant containing DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
- Stay indoors during the hours of dusk and dawn, when many mosquitoes are most active.
