On October 5th, Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District (MAD) proudly joined the community at the 13th Annual Compton Walk for a Cure at Centennial High School. This inspiring event, founded by Compton Unified School District Board Member Satra Zurita, along with her sister, the Honorable Janna Zurita, brings together residents to raise awareness about breast cancer and celebrate survivors’ journeys.

Our General Manager, John Franklin, was on-site to show our support and spread vital information about mosquito control and prevention. We set up a booth to educate attendees about mosquito-borne diseases, the importance of removing standing water, and the use of EPA-approved insect repellents.

The Walk for a Cure is a vital event for the Compton community, offering health screenings, entertainment, and resources to support wellness. As part of the event’s health-focused mission, we aimed to inform participants about mosquito safety, emphasizing that preventing bites can help reduce the risk of diseases like West Nile virus and dengue.

Compton Creek MAD remains committed to protecting public health and supporting community causes like this one. We believe that awareness, prevention, and early detection are crucial not only in the fight against breast cancer but also in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases. We look forward to participating again next year!

How You Can Stay Safe

  • Eliminate Standing Water: Dump out containers where mosquitoes can breed.
  • Use Insect Repellent: Apply repellent containing DEET or Picaridin before heading outdoors.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: Cover up with long sleeves and pants, especially during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk).
  • Check Your Screens: Ensure windows and doors have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out.
