On November 18th, 2017, the Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District (CCMAD) teamed up with Compton Councilwoman and CCMAD Trustee Janna Zurita to hand out Thanksgiving turkeys to more than 500 families and residents at Gonzales Park.

On November 18th, 2017, the Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District (CCMAD) teamed up with Compton Councilwoman and CCMAD Trustee Janna Zurita to hand out Thanksgiving turkeys to more than 500 families and residents at Gonzales Park. 
While Councilwoman Zurita gave back to her constituents by distributing turkeys to hungry families, CCMAD provided turkey bags and shared educational information about how residents can protect themselves from mosquitoes and the diseases they may carry. Other community groups handed out canned goods, non-perishable foodstuffs, fresh produce, drinks, and even children’s clothes.
Several individuals helped ensure that the event ran smoothly. CCMAD would like to thank Ms. Ke’ahna Lewis and Ms. Patrice Royal for their helpful assistance in distributing turkey bags. We would also like to give special thanks to the emcee/DJ – Mr. Ilu Johnson of Bomb Entertainment – who was instrumental in keeping what could have been a chaotic event, organized and seamless.
This annual event promotes community and civic engagement by getting citizens out and interacting with their elected officials and the agencies that provide so many crucial services.

Remember, you can protect yourself and your community by following these simple safety steps:

Remove all standing water on your property; that is where mosquitoes breed.
Ensure rain barrels are properly sealed to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Ensure all screens around your home are in good repair to keep mosquitoes out.
Wear loose long sleeve shirts and long pants to prevent mosquitoes from biting.
Wear insect repellant containing DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
Stay indoors during the hours of dusk and dawn, when many mosquitoes are most active.
