The Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District (CCMAD) played a pivotal role in educating and engaging young minds at the recent Verizon Innovative Learning Lab Student Showcase held at Compton Early College. The event took place on Earth Day and was a resounding success. Over 100 students from grades 7 through 12 presented innovative solutions to global challenges as part of their commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The showcase featured eighteen teams of students who introduced forward-thinking projects ranging from smart city concepts designed to mitigate climate change impacts to sustainable food systems that help address global food insecurity. These student-led initiatives showcased their creativity and dedication to positively impacting the world.

Compton Creek MAD took an active role in the event, setting up an educational booth to enhance the learning experience. District staff provided materials, engaged in discussions, and educated hundreds of students on effective mosquito prevention methods and the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases. Notably, the booth was accessible during the students’ lunch period, allowing CCMAD to reach a broad audience.

Participating in events like this is just one of the many ways that CCMAD actively engages with the community. This type of public education is a crucial component of our integrated mosquito management plan.By participating in influential events, CCMAD underscores the importance of community-based approaches to mosquito management and disease prevention.
