The Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District sent a delegation to DC to advocate for community safety and public health as part of the national lobby and advocacy day organized by the American Mosquito Control Association.

Compton Creek’s delegation consisted of Board President Micah Ali and Compton Creek Board Member Tana McCoy were joined in Washington D.C. by Compton City Manager Cecil Rhambo and Compton Creek General Manager Mitchel R. Weinbaum.

Our delegation met with Congresswoman Nanette Barragán and staff members from Senator Kamala Harris’s and Senator Diane Feinstein’s offices to discuss pressing issues impacting our District and the greater Compton community.

We had the opportunity to communicate, firsthand, our appreciation for the federal government’s assistance – through the US Army Corps of Engineers – in allocating funding for long over-due maintenance and rehabilitation on the Compton Creek, achieving the dual-goals of excellent flood protection and restoring the flow of water (thus eliminating mosquito breeding habitats).

Compton Creek was one of many mosquito districts in our nation’s Capital as part of the wider American Mosquito Control Association lobby and advocacy day. Organizations, including ours, lobbied for additional funding as well as ensuring a holistic mosquito control method that includes biological measures and considers the entire environment as a closed eco-system to mitigate unforeseen damage.
