School may be out for the summer, but the Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District is already gearing up for the start of the 2019-20 school year later this August.

This year marks the 7th anniversary of our Mosquito Abatement 101 Education Series that we host at middle school sites across the Compton Unified School District.

Aimed at 7th Graders in Life Science, the education series is taught by our District’s General Manager, Mitchel R. Weinbaum, and covers basic facts about the life-cycle, habits, management, and danger of mosquitoes.

These classes are just one small part of our ongoing shared-responsibility initiative that aims to enlist members of the community in being proactive when it comes to controlling mosquito populations at their own homes.

This year, the District aims to reach 1,500 students across nine school sites.

However, you don’t have to wait if you want to get involved now! Partner with us by following these five simple tips:

  1. DUMP & DRAIN STANDING WATER

Get rid of standing water in and around your property – that’s where mosquitoes breed.

  1. AVOID DUSK & DAWN

Stay indoors during the hours of dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

  1. DEFEND YOURSELF

Protect yourself from mosquito bites – wear long-sleeve shirts and pants along with approved insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

  1. INSPECT YOUR PROPERTY

Ensure rain barrels and window screens are sealed and in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from entering.

  1. REPORT DEAD BIRDS

Before handling and disposing of dead birds, report them by calling 877-WNV-BIRD (968-2473).
